It’s no surprise Oxford Dictionary named “vape” 2014’s word of the year. Vaping has eliminated the health risks associated with smoking marijuana and are commonplace in elderly homes and hospitals in Israel. In Canada and the European Union, the Volcano is an approved medical device.
Vapor is a lot like steam. Using hot air, vaporizers heat plant matter to temperatures above the boiling point of cannabinoids but below the plant’s combustion point, releasing active cannabinoids without the toxins associated with combustion — giving us only the desired effects.
So take a deep breath, sit back, relax and enjoy these seven reasons to quit smoking and start vaping:
1. Ciao, carcinogens!
When cannabis combusts, it releases pyrolytic toxins into the smoke. Some of these compounds, known as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are correlated to cancer. Although there’s no link between smoking cannabis and COPD or lung cancer, studies show it is correlated with higher risks of respiratory infection and chronic bronchitis due to damage to respiratory tissue cells.
Good news: vaporizing removes these harmful by-products.
Using a Volcano, a glass pipe and 200 mg samples of cannabis obtained from NIDA, California NORML and MAPS conducted a study to compare PAHs in vapor and smoke. Only three non-cannabinoid compounds were identified in the vapor (one being caryophyllene, a terpene found in many plants) while more than 100 were identified in the smoke — including five PAHs.
2. Copious cannabinoids
Burning plant matter with a lighter destroys cannabinoids and the flavor-creating terpenes. While it’s true cannabinoids must be heated to become activated, they don’t need to be burnt.
According to the CA NORML/MAPS study, only a quarter of the available THC is converted while smoking a joint, whereas nearly 50 percent is converted using a vaporizer.
Unfortunately, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD (which is a known anti-convulsant, anti-psychotic and anti-depressant) has a higher boiling point than THC, making it present in smoke but not vapor.
In several studies, medical patients said vaping is the most efficient method of taking their medicine. Edibles and infused drinks can take up to an hour to kick in, as the liver must metabolize the cannabinoids before entering the blood stream. Since the lungs absorb cannabinoids in seconds, vaping is the fastest way to obtain pain relief in a controlled dosage. Patients also ranked vaping highest in side effect satisfaction, saying they felt most functional and clear-headed from a vaporized high than others.
So break away from the stoner stigmas and stereotypes of the past, save money and improve your health by investing in a vaporizer of the future today!
3. Your lungs will thank you
Ever get high and feel short of breath? It’s not paranoia, bro — the longer smoke is held in the lungs, the more tar and harmful chemicals are absorbed. Look at an ash tray. When you smoke, there’s no filter, so those ashes go straight into the lungs. The smoke is harsh to everything it touches, causing damage to both the bronchial tract and lungs.
Take short, shallow breaths — 95 percent of the THC is absorbed into your system within seconds of inhaling vapor.
Vaporizing not only increases the yield of anti-inflammatory terpenoids protecting our lungs from irritation, it can also reverse the respiratory symptoms associated with smoking. In a 2010 studyconducted by Mitch Earleywine and Nicholas Van Dam, cannabis smokers complaining of respiratory irritation including asthma, shortness of breath, coughing and phlegm reported huge reductions in symptoms after switching to a vaporizer!
4. It’s tasty!
Consider vaping a form of stoner aromatherapy! Terpenes, or terpenoids, give cannabis plants their distinct aromas. When cannabis is vaporized, trichomes and terpenes evaporate while plant matter stays intact. Unlike combustion, vaporizing preserves terpenes and offers a much more flavorful experience (often with stronger effects) than the breakable, resin-filled glass bowls of the past.
5. Money, money, money
Stop wasting money replacing stolen lighters and smashed ash trays. Invest in a high-quality vape with a warranty and you won’t burn through half as much weed as you currently do —no pun intended. Vaping conserves herb by delivering twice as many cannabinoids to the user, meaning you won’t need to smoke half as much as you currently do. And after the bud has been vaporized into a crispy little colorless nug, throw it in a contain and recycle it into budder!
6. Stay low-key
Want a vaporizer that’s portable, pocket-sized and looks like an e-cig? Get a vape pen to carry around wherever you go for discreet public use — and throw-out those TP-roll doob tubes you’ve been making over the years. Vapor’s faint odor doesn’t linger or carry, meaning you can celebrate 4:20 all day, every day without your neighbors knowing.
Worst case scenario is the “burnt popcorn smell,” which occurs when bud has been fully vaped. Vaping also means no more worrying about teeth stains, taste bud damage or lingering smells on furniture, clothes and hair.
